Restoration works of the ceramic decor of the PO RIES RAMS library facade

The beginning of restoration works of the ceramic decor (small and big pipes, freeze, the composition "The Emblem and two Angels", portal and tiled window sills) of the library facade.
The project of the IEM library was developed by the architect G.I.Lucedarsky in February, 1911. The facility is mainly a brick construction, except for few interior bulkheads made of hollow blocks although it was supposed to be an entirely stone construction.
The tiles that appear today on the library faсade were used for decoration of the Russian Pavilion in the Dresden Hygiene Exhibition in 1911. The magazines were full of articles stating the advantages of this pavilion that was built in "Russian style" and decorated with majolica resembling Old Russian tiles. The magazine "Salonblatt" had the following statement about it: "The Russian Pavilion with its interesting forms and rich colors is definitely the most outstanding building of the whole Hercules Alley… Characteristically Russian décor on the façade are made by Russian craftsmen. For example, amazing majolica works on the Pavilion facade were done by masters from St. Petersburg Company Gildvein & Vaulin. A huge Russian emblem held by two beautiful angels is made of amazing majolica plates above the heavy iron door of the main portal".

Unfortunately no project materials are presented nowadays that could be somehow connected with the portal which is definitely the main decorative element of the building. It includes a shaped door trim, a frontal full of florets and figurines of birds, and a huge archivolt decorated with big green crowns and belts on light background. The archivolt, the arc of which is close to the semi circle, leans upon two columns covered with ornament and topped with capitals. Every capital has an odd-shaped detail which is a base for the majolica emblem with a two-headed eagle. These emblems were destroyed during the Soviet time. The portal is separated from the wall field with the help of large light majolica plates. In the left part of the portal close to the column there is an amazing image of a unicorn made in a low relief; on the left there is an image of griffon.
Unfortunately one of the most distinguished elements of the faсade decor, a big Russian emblem held by two angels, was also lost. The emblem was made of colored majolica plates. There survived one colored image of the Russian Pavilion in the Dresden Exhibition. It is a copy of the water-color drawing by E.Limmer.
